Top Seven Tips for Child Car Seat Safety

Idaho Falls car accident lawyers at Brent Gordon Law know being in a car accident is bad enough. But, being in a car accident with your kids in the car is a nightmare. Make sure your child is properly restrained while riding in the car with these top seven child car seat safety tips.

  1. Keep an infant rear facing for as long as possible.

Rear facing is the safest position in the car for young children. At very least, keep infants rear facing until they are about one year old or weigh 20 to 22 pounds.

  1. Kids need to ride in the backseat.

The backseat is generally the safest place in the event of a car accident; more specifically the middle. It is recommended to keep older kids in the middle because a younger child still has a car seat for protection. For vehicles with a passenger air bag, children 12 and under cannot be near the air bag.

  1. Avoid bulky clothes.

It was recently found that kids wearing extra clothing such as a coat, are not as restrained as needed. The extra fabric adds more space between the belts. Removing the coat will allow the belts to fit more snug against the child. Thus, the belts can restrain the child in the event of an accident.

  1. Always use your child’s car seat or booster.

It may be tempting to forget the booster while riding in a taxi or another person’s car. Don’t do it. Your child needs their car seat or booster at all times until they are big enough to ride without it. Always keep your child in a safety seat with a full harness as long as possible. When the child is 40 pounds, move to a booster seat.

  1. Keep the harness buckled snugly around the child.

Make sure the straps are over your child’s shoulder and the harness is fitting properly. You should not be able to pinch the belt. Keep the chest clip at armpit level.

  1. Never used an expired car seat.

Check to make sure your child’s car seat has not been recalled or that it is expired. The belts and plastic of a car seat wear over time and thus become expired. Make sure to sign up for recall notifications of your car seat as well.

  1. Get help with car seat installation if needed.
