Idaho Rules of the Road: Driving Upon Sidewalks

The Idaho Rules of the Road prohibit a person operating a vehicle from driving upon sidewalks.  This law does not apply to bicycles or skateboards or motorized wheelchairs.

The Idaho Rules of the Road governing driving upon a sidewalk are as follows:

Idaho Code § 49-605.  Driving Upon Sidewalks

No person shall drive any vehicle upon a sidewalk or sidewalk area except upon a permanent or temporary driveway. This section shall not apply to any vehicle moved exclusively by human power, a personal delivery device, an electric personal assistive mobility device, nor to any motorized wheelchair. For the purposes of assuring the safety of pedestrians and others using sidewalks, a political subdivision having jurisdiction over sidewalks may, by ordinance or by traffic control device, regulate the time, place and manner of the operation of electric personal assistive mobility devices.

Most Americans Choose to Drive Instead of Walk

A study done by National Geographic in 2012 reported that only 34 percent of Americans walk to destinations (school, jobs, shopping, etc.). Germans and Spaniards reportedly walk about twice as much. Why don’t Americans choose to walk more? A main reason is it is downright dangerous. A report from the nonprofit organization National Complete Streets Coalitions said 47,000 pedestrians were killed in the United States between 2003 to 2012. In addition, 676,000 pedestrians were injured. This number is equivalent to a car or truck hitting a pedestrian every eight minutes.
