Car Accident from Icy Roads Hospitalizes FiveIdaho State Police reported a car accident caused by icy roads that hospitalized all five involved in the accident. A single passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on State Highway 33 when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to some ice on the roadway. The vehicle collided with an oncoming vehicle heading northbound and carrying three passengers plus the driver. All five people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts at the time of the car accident. However, all five were transported by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. The highway was blocked for about three hours while crews worked to clear the scene of the accident.

What to do if Your Car is Sliding on Ice

When driving on slick icy road conditions, it is important to remember to slow down. If you are sliding or fishtailing at all, it means you are going too fast for the road conditions. The best thing you can do is drive at a safe speed and avoid sudden braking, turning or accelerating. The following are some tips to keep in mind if you find your car is sliding on ice.

Avoid Braking

One of the most common mistakes drivers can make when driving on ice is braking. Braking only will trigger a slide and make it worse. In order to correct your wheels, you need to allow them to turn freely.

Turn into the Slide

Turn your steering wheel in the same direction that the rear of your vehicle is sliding. For instance, if the back of your vehicle is sliding to the right, turn the steering wheel to the right. As your vehicle straightens out, straighten out the steering wheel.

Avoid Overcorrecting

Another common mistake many drivers make on ice is overcorrecting. An oversteer slide gives the car angular momentum which means it will want to spin in a full circle. This will make the car spin out.
