A driver swerved to avoid hitting an animal on Highway 20 but ended up in a rollover accident reported the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the incident around 7 AM Wednesday morning. A car was traveling southbound when it swerved to avoid hitting an animal crossing the road causing the car to overturn through the median and ended up in the northbound lanes. A car heading northbound attempted to avoid hitting the car that had come into his lane but was hit by another car causing all three to end up in a car accident. No one suffered injuries and no one was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Wildlife are the cause of many car accidents. Consider the following statistics:

  • On average, some form of wildlife causes an accident every 39 minutes.
  • 1 out of every 17 car accidents involves wildlife wandering onto the road.
  • 89% of car accidents involving wildlife happen on two lane roads.
  • 84% of all wildlife crashes occur during good weather and on dry roads.
  • On average, a car-deer collision costs $2,800.
  • In the United States, approximately 200 drivers die each year from wildlife collisions.

After reading these statistics you may be wondering if it is worth it to swerve or not. Experts advise not swerving. The amount of damage you could do to yourself and your vehicle is significantly less than if you were to swerve and accidentally hit another car. If you do encounter wildlife on the road honk the horn, lock the brakes, and (if you have time) duck behind the dashboard before you collide. However, if you encounter a moose, do swerve. An adult moose weighs around 1,600 pounds. Hitting a moose is equivalent to hitting a compact car on stilts and could likely incur long-term injuries or even be fatal to the persons sitting in the front.
